Research Interests
One of the most impressive achievements in physics resides in the ability of quantum field theory (QFT) to quantitatively describe the interactions between the fundamental particles of the Standard Model. A famous example is the remarkable agreement, one part in a billion, between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the electron anomalous magnetic moment. However, most fundamental parameters, particularly in Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and the Higgs sector, have not reached such precision. Advancing precision frontier will allow us to investigate outstanding puzzles in particle physics, search for new physics, and deepen our understanding of QFT itself.
Xiaoyuan’s research focuses on bridging QFT with collider physics experiments using both perturbative QCD techniques and effective field theories. During his Ph.D., he introduced new collider observables and theoretical techniques enabling world-leading theory predictions, and applied them to the measurement of strong coupling constant at both electron-positron and proton-proton colliders.
Biographical Sketch
Xiaoyuan was born and raised in Chaozhou, Guangdong, China. He went to Zhejiang University for college, where he received a B.S. in Physics with honors. At Zhejiang, he worked with Profs. HuaXing Zhu and Kai Wang, and developed a strong interest in Quantum Chromodynamics and collider physics. He then moved to Harvard University to pursue a Ph.D. in Physics under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Schwartz, focusing on effective field theories and precision calculations in the Standard Model.
