It has been shown that a first order confinement phase transition can drastically change the relic dark matter abundance in confining dark sectors with only heavy dark quarks. We study the phenomenology of one such model with a Z' portal to Standard Model. We find that dark glueballs are long-lived in this setup and dilute the dark matter abundance after their decay to Standard Model. With this effect, the correct relic abundance is obtained with dark matter masses up to \(\mathcal{O}(10^6)\)~TeV. We find that while a part of the parameter space is already ruled out by direct detection and collider searches, there is still a broad space of viable scenarios that can be probed by future experiments.

We construct a class of pure quark and gluon observables by using the collinear drop grooming technique. The construction is based on linear combinations of multiple cumulative distributions of the jet mass in collinear drop, whose specific weights are fully predicted perturbatively. This yields observables which obtain their values purely from quarks (or purely from gluons) in a wide region of phase space. We demonstrate this by showing that these observables are effective in two phase space regions, one dominated by perturbative resummation and one dominated by nonperturbative effects. The nonperturbative effects are included using shape functions which only appear as a common factor in the linear combinations constructed. We test this construction using a numerical analysis with next-to-leading logarithmic resummation and various shape function models, as well as analyzing these observables with Pythia and Vincia. Choices for the collinear drop parameters are optimized for experimental use.

As particles traverse the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed during a heavy ion collision they undergo energy loss depending on the distance travelled. We study several temperature- and velocity-weighted path length distributions of non-interacting particles as they traverse the plasma using the Trajectum heavy ion code, including those of back-to-back path lengths. We use event-shape engineering (ESE) in combination with in-plane versus out-of-plane selection to accurately control these path lengths. Lastly, we show how soft observables depend on the different ESE classes.

In this work we aim to gain qualitative insight on the far-from-equilibrium behavior of the gluon plasma produced in the early stages of a heavy-ion collision. It was recently discovered arXiv:1810.10554 that the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in QCD effective kinetic theory (EKT) exhibit self-similar "scaling" evolution with time-dependent scaling exponents long before those exponents reach their fixed-point values. In this work we shed light on the origin of this time-dependent scaling phenomenon in the small-angle approximation to the Boltzmann equation. We first solve the Boltzmann equation numerically and find that time-dependent scaling is a feature of this kinetic theory, and that it captures key qualitative features of the scaling of hard gluons in QCD EKT. We then proceed to study scaling analytically and semi-analytically in this equation. We find that an appropriate momentum rescaling allows the scaling distribution to be identified as the instantaneous ground state of the operator describing the evolution of the distribution function, and the approach to the scaling function is described by the decay of the excited states. That is to say, there is a frame in which the system evolves adiabatically. Furthermore, from the conditions for adiabaticity we can derive evolution equations for the time-dependent scaling exponents. In addition to the known free-streaming and BMSS fixed points, we identify a new "dilute" fixed point when the number density becomes small before thermalization. Corrections to the fixed point exponents in the small-angle approximation agree quantitatively with those found previously in QCD EKT and arise from the evolution of the ratio between hard and soft scales.

Current noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices suffer from various sources of intrinsic quantum noise. Overcoming the effects of noise is a major challenge, for which different error mitigation and error correction techniques have been proposed. In this paper, we conduct a first study of the performance of quantum Generative Adversarial Networks (qGANs) in the presence of different types of quantum noise, focusing on a simplified use case in high-energy physics. In particular, we explore the effects of readout and two-qubit gate errors on the qGAN training process. Simulating a noisy quantum device classically with IBM's Qiskit framework, we examine the threshold of error rates up to which a reliable training is possible. In addition, we investigate the importance of various hyperparameters for the training process in the presence of different error rates, and we explore the impact of readout error mitigation on the results.

Recent results suggest that flow-based algorithms may provide efficient sampling of field distributions for lattice field theory applications, such as studies of quantum chromodynamics and the Schwinger model. In this work, we provide a numerical demonstration of robust flow-based sampling in the Schwinger model at the critical value of the fermion mass. In contrast, at the same parameters, conventional methods fail to sample all parts of configuration space, leading to severely underestimated uncertainties.

A fraction of the dark matter may consist of a particle species that interacts much more strongly with the Standard Model than a typical weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) of similar mass. Such a strongly interacting dark matter component could have avoided detection in searches for WIMP-like dark matter through its interactions with the material in the atmosphere and the Earth that slow it down significantly before reaching detectors underground. These same interactions can also enhance the density of a strongly interacting dark matter species near the Earth's surface to well above the local galactic dark matter density. In this work we propose two new methods of detecting strongly interacting dark matter based on accelerating the enhanced population expected in the Earth through scattering. The first approach is to use underground nuclear accelerator beams to upscatter the ambient dark matter population into a WIMP-style detector located downstream. In the second technique, dark matter is upscattered with an intense thermal source and detected with a low-threshold dark matter detector. We also discuss potential candidates for strongly interacting dark matter and we show that the scenario can be naturally realized with a hidden fermion coupled to a sub-GeV dark photon.

Axion dark matter (DM) may efficiently convert to photons in the magnetospheres of neutron stars (NSs), producing nearly monochromatic radio emission. This process is resonantly triggered when the plasma frequency induced by the underlying charge distribution approximately matches the axion mass. We search for evidence of this process using archival Green Bank Telescope data collected in a survey of the Galactic Center in the C-Band by the Breakthrough Listen project. While Breakthrough Listen aims to find signatures of extraterrestrial life in the radio band, we show that their high-frequency resolution spectral data of the Galactic Center region is ideal for searching for axion-photon transitions generated by the population of NSs in the inner pc of the Galaxy. We use data-driven models to capture the distributions and properties of NSs in the inner Galaxy and compute the expected radio flux from each NS using state-of-the-art ray tracing simulations. We find no evidence for axion DM and set leading constraints on the axion-photon coupling, excluding values down to the level \(g_{a \gamma \gamma} \sim 10^{-11}\) GeV\(^{-1}\) for DM axions for masses between 15 and 35 \(\mu\)eV.

We review briefly the characteristic topological data of Calabi--Yau threefolds and focus on the question of when two threefolds are equivalent through related topological data. This provides an interesting test case for machine learning methodology in discrete mathematics problems motivated by physics.

The LUXE experiment (LASER Und XFEL Experiment) is a new experiment in planning at DESY Hamburg, which will study Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) at the strong-field frontier. In this regime, QED is non-perturbative. This manifests itself in the creation of physical electron-positron pairs from the QED vacuum. LUXE intends to measure the positron production rate in this unprecedented regime by using, among others, a silicon tracking detector. The large number of expected positrons traversing the sensitive detector layers results in an extremely challenging combinatorial problem, which can become computationally very hard for classical computers. This paper presents a preliminary study to explore the potential of quantum computers to solve this problem and to reconstruct the positron trajectories from the detector energy deposits. The reconstruction problem is formulated in terms of a quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation. Finally, the results from the quantum simulations are discussed and compared with traditional classical track reconstruction algorithms.

There is great potential to apply machine learning in the area of numerical lattice quantum field theory, but full exploitation of that potential will require new strategies. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process, we discuss the unique requirements of machine learning for lattice quantum field theory research and outline what is needed to enable exploration and deployment of this approach in the future.

Finite-volume pionless effective field theory provides an efficient framework for the extrapolation of nuclear spectra and matrix elements calculated at finite volume in lattice QCD to infinite volume, and to nuclei with larger atomic number. In this work, it is demonstrated how this framework may be implemented via a set of correlated Gaussian wavefunctions optimised using differentiable programming and via solution of a generalised eigenvalue problem. This approach is shown to be significantly more efficient than a stochastic implementation of the variational method based on the same form of correlated Gaussian wavefunctions, yielding comparably accurate representations of the ground-state wavefunctions with an order of magnitude fewer terms. The efficiency of representation allows such calculations to be extended to larger systems than in previous work. The method is demonstrated through calculations of the binding energies of nuclei with atomic number \(A\in\{2,3,4\}\) in finite volume, matched to lattice QCD calculations at quark masses corresponding to \(m_\pi=806\) MeV, and infinite-volume effective field theory calculations of \(A\in\{2,3,4,5,6\}\) systems based on this matching.

We present the first lattice study of pion-pion scattering with varying number of colors, \(N_\text{c}\). We use lattice simulations with four degenerate quark flavors, \(N_\text{f}=4\), and \(N_\text{c}=3-6\). We focus on two scattering channels that do not involve vacuum diagrams. These correspond to two irreducible representations of the SU(4) flavor group: the fully symmetric one, \(SS\), and the fully antisymmetric one, \(AA\). The former is a repulsive channel equivalent to the isospin-2 channel of SU(2). By contrast, the latter is attractive and only exists for \(N_\text{f} \geq 4\). A representative state is \(\left( |D_s^+ \pi^+\rangle - |D^+ K^+\rangle\right)/\sqrt{2}\). Using Lüscher's formalism, we extract the near-threshold scattering amplitude and we match our results to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at large \(N_\text{c}\). For this, we compute the analytical U\((N_\text{f})\) ChPT prediction for two-pion scattering, and use the lattice results to constrain the \(N_\text{c}\) scaling of the relevant low-energy couplings.

In a chain of \(N\) spins governed by a local Hamiltonian, we consider eigenstates in a microcanonical ensemble in the middle of the energy spectrum. We prove that if the bandwidth of the ensemble is \(C\ln^2N\) for a large constant \(C\), then the average entanglement entropy of these eigenstates is bounded away from the maximum entropy. This result highlights the difference between the entanglement of mid-spectrum eigenstates of (chaotic) local Hamiltonians and that of random states, for the latter is nearly maximal. We also prove that the former is different from the thermodynamic entropy at the same energy.

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) can be studied from first principles by a perturbative matching onto lattice-calculable quantities: so-called lattice TMDs, which are a class of equal-time correlators that includes quasi-TMDs and TMDs in the Lorentz-invariant approach. We introduce a general correlator that includes as special cases these two Lattice TMDs and continuum TMDs, like the Collins scheme. Then, to facilitate the derivation of a factorization relation between lattice and continuum TMDs, we construct a new scheme, the Large Rapidity (LR) scheme, intermediate between the Collins and quasi-TMDs. The LR and Collins schemes differ only by an order of limits, and can be matched onto one another by a multiplicative kernel. We show that this same matching also holds between quasi and Collins TMDs, which enables us to prove a factorization relation between these quantities to all orders in \(\alpha_s\). Our results imply that there is no mixing between various quark flavors or gluons when matching Collins and quasi TMDs, making the lattice calculation of individual flavors and gluon TMDs easier than anticipated. We cross-check these results explicitly at one loop and discuss implications for other physical-to-lattice scheme factorizations.

We show that the canonical purification of an evaporating black hole after the Page time consists of a short, connected, Lorentzian wormhole between two asymptotic boundaries, one of which is unitarily related to the radiation. This provides a quantitative and general realization of the predictions of ER=EPR in an evaporating black hole after the Page time; this further gives a standard AdS/CFT calculation of the entropy of the radiation (without modifications of the homology constraint). Before the Page time, the canonical purification consists of two disconnected, semiclassical black holes. From this, we construct two bipartite entangled holographic CFT states, with equal (and large) amount of entanglement, where the semiclassical dual of one has a connected ERB and the other does not. From this example, we speculate that that measures of multipartite entanglement may offer a more complete picture into the emergence of spacetime.

Jets of hadrons produced at high-energy colliders provide experimental access to the dynamics of asymptotically free quarks and gluons and their confinement into hadrons. In this paper, we show that the high energies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), together with the exceptional resolution of its detectors, allow multipoint correlation functions of energy flow operators to be directly measured within jets for the first time. Using Open Data from the CMS experiment, we show that reformulating jet substructure in terms of these correlators provides new ways of probing the dynamics of QCD jets, which enables direct imaging of the confining transition to free hadrons as well as precision measurements of the scaling properties and interactions of quarks and gluons. This opens a new era in our understanding of jet substructure and illustrates the immense unexploited potential of high-quality LHC data sets for elucidating the dynamics of QCD.

Quarkonium suppression in relativistic heavy ion collisions has been studied experimentally for decades to probe the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. For this purpose, complete theoretical understanding of the time evolution of quarkonium inside the quark-gluon plasma is needed but challenging. Here I review recent progress in applying the open quantum system framework to describe the real-time dynamics of quarkonium, with a focus on the gauge-invariant chromoelectric field correlators of the plasma that control the dynamics.

The extraction of nonperturbative TMD physics is made challenging by prescriptions that shield the Landau pole, which entangle long- and short-distance contributions in momentum space. The use of different prescriptions then makes the comparison of fit results for underlying nonperturbative contributions not meaningful on their own. We propose a model-independent method to restrict momentum-space observables to the perturbative domain. This method is based on a set of integral functionals that act linearly on terms in the conventional position-space operator product expansion (OPE). Artifacts from the truncation of the integral can be systematically pushed to higher powers in \(\Lambda_{\rm QCD}/k_T\). We demonstrate that this method can be used to compute the cumulative integral of TMD PDFs over \(k_T \le k_T^\mathrm{cut}\) in terms of collinear PDFs, accounting for both radiative corrections and evolution effects. This yields a systematic way of correcting the naive picture where the TMD PDF integrates to a collinear PDF, and for unpolarized quark distributions we find that when renormalization scales are chosen near \(k_T^\mathrm{cut}\), such corrections are a percent-level effect. We also show that, when supplemented with experimental data and improved perturbative inputs, our integral functionals will enable model-independent limits to be put on the nonperturbative OPE contributions to the Collins-Soper kernel and intrinsic TMD distributions.

We study non-perturbative superpotential generated by D(-1)-branes in type IIB compactifications on orientifolds of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces. To compute D-instanton superpotential, we study F-theory compactification on toric complete intersection elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds. We take the Sen-limit, but with finite \(g_s,\) in F-theory compactification with a restriction that all D7-branes are carrying SO(8) gauge groups, which we call the global Sen-limit. In the global Sen-limit, the axio-dilaton is not varying in the compactification manifold. We compute the Picard-Fuchs equations of elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds in the global Sen-limit, and show that the Picard-Fuchs equations of the elliptic fourfolds split into that of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefolds and of the elliptic fiber. We then demonstrate that this splitting property of the Picard-Fuchs equation implies that the fourform period of the elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds in the global Sen-limit does not contain exponentially suppressed terms \(\mathcal{O}(e^{-\pi/g_s})\). With this result, we finally show that in the global Sen-limit, superpotential of the underlying type IIB compactification does not receive D-instanton contributions.
